Artist Biography

Born in 1947, Moira MacMurray is a well-known artist who has exhibited all over South Africa and internationally in London, New York, Malawi, Korea and Paris. She has had 24 solo exhibitions ans has been part of over 300 group exhibitions since 1980. She has been "Artist at Home" for the Friends of the Johannesburg Art Gallery three times.

She has a keen interest in old buildings, furniture and antique jewellery. Her work in various public and private collections locally and internationally. She is also a member of The Water Colour Society of S.A. and The S.A. Association of Arts.

Born 1947 in London, England

1971 to 1979: Moved around South Africa and Rhodesia (now Zimbabwe) with Geologist husband

1974: Obtained "Lyceum" Diploma in Interior Decorating

1979: Settled in Pietersburg, Northern Transvaal. Started to paint seriously.

1981: Moved to Johannesburg with husband and three daughters.

CAREER HIGHLIGHTS

  • 1980: First Group Exhibition
  • 1981: "Birds and Cats" Exhibition at the Laura Collection Rosebank
  • 1988: Won Stellenbosch Farmers Winery, Chatelet. "Art on the Boulevard" competition
  • 1989: Completed an etching course with well known Artist Gail Machanick
    Exhibited a Clock on the "Style Design Awards"
    Cape Town, Durban and at the Natalie Knight Gallery
  • 1990: Attained Associateship of the "Watercolour Society of S.A."
    Won Merit Award for Miniatures from "Del Bello Gallery Toronto, Canada"
    Exhibition at British Council, Llilongwe, Malawi
  • 1991: Illustrated book using cats for Prof. Jack Otis of Texas U.S.A.
    Presented the "Irish House Museum" in Pietersburg with 42 watercolours of buildings now demolished
    Commissioned by the Pietersburg Municipality to do a painting of Market Square circa 1900. Much research was involved.
  • 1992: Founder member of the Miniature Art Society of South Africa
    Participated in "Cape Town Art Festival" at the Dock Road Venue on the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront.
  • 1993: Painting of "Urquhart House" accepted by Graaff Rienett Municipal Collection.
  • 1994: "STRENGTHENING THE LINK" Exhibition, New York, U.S.A.
  • 1995: World Exhibition of Miniature Art, Royal Miniature Art Society Centenary Exhibition, Westminster Gallery, London.
  • 2002: Represented S.A. at W.A.S.H International Exhibition, Houston, Texas.

    Has been part of over 300 Group Exhibitions since 1980.

    Has been "Artist at Home" for the Friends of the Johannesburg Art Gallery three times
