Many directors and screenwriters have written or adapted the stories and histories of various artists and artworks into films. This year's films include pseudo-biography based on Danish artist Lili Elbe, who was one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery and stars the talented Eddie Redmayne; a science fiction horror based on Stephan King's novel Cell; the world's first feature-length painted animation based on Vincent van Gogh; and a docu-narrative following a young accountant who pursues painting. THE DANISH GIRL  The Danish Girl is a British pseudo-biographical drama film directed by Tom Hooper, based on the 2000 fictional novel of the same name by David Ebershoff and loosely inspired by the lives of Danish painters Lili Elbe and Gerda Wegener. The film stars Eddie Redmayne as Lili Elbe, one of the first known recipients of sex reassignment surgery. View the trailer [here] Release Date: 29 January 2016 at Ster Kinekor Cinema Nouveau CELL A science fiction horror film directed by Tod Williams, based on Stephan King's 2006 novel of the same name. The film follows Clay Riddell (John Cusack), a New England artist, is a witness to an ugly phenomenon: a mysterious signal broadcast over the global cell phone network turns the majority of his fellow humans into mindless vicious animals. Now he and a few survivors must find and stop 'the pulse' and the person controlling it and reunite with his young son before it's too late. Release date: TBA LOVING VINCENT  Loving Vincent, the world's first feature-length painted animation, is an investigation delving into the life and controversial death of Vincent Van Gogh, one of the world's most beloved painters, told by his paintings (over one hundred and twenty) and by the characters that inhabit them. The intrigue unfolds through interviews with the characters closest to Vincent and through dramatic reconstructions of the events leading up to his death. The plot, drawn from the 800 letters written by the painter himself, lead us to the significant people and events in the time leading up to his unexpected death. View the trailer [here] Release date: TBA TULIP FEVER Set in the Netherlands in early the 17th-century, during the period of the Tulip mania, an artist (Dane DeHaan) falls for a married young woman (Alicia Vikander) while he's commissioned to paint her portrait by her husband (Christoph Waltz). The two invest in the risky tulip market in hopes to build a future together. Release date: TBA A CITY OF SHOULDERS AND NOSES The son of a renowned sculptor and a beautiful Italian heiress must endure the deranged behavior of his stepmother, while his friends help him unlock the thirty year-old mystery of his parents' murders in New Haven, Connecticut. Release date: TBA PAINTING ANNA Painting Anna is a docu-narrative that follows a young accountant as she finally pursues her dream of becoming a painter and moves into an experimental apartment building designed for artists.
