South African Artist-Run Galleries You Need to Know Posted on 30 March 2016
Do artists make better gallerists? More and more artist-run spaces are growing around the world circumventing the structures of public and private galleries. These spaces continually evolve models of display and operation, often filling gaps and holes that the current art-world is failing to provide. In art-centric cities such as New York and Glasgow, artist-run spaces are making their mark in their art communities, bringing new vision, ideas, and intentions. We took a look at a group of independent South African artist project spaces recasting what a traditional gallery can be. KALASHNIKOVV GALLERY JOHANNESBURG

The Kalashnikovv Gallery was established in 2013 by long term collaborators M.J Turpin and Matthew Dean Dowdle "out of frustration with the current South African Contemporary Art world and the prevailing "white cube" gallery discourse". It is a hybrid space that does not limit itself to the traditional and often hosts "one-night" exhibitions and events not solely focused on visual art such as music and performances. They move away from fixating on selling art to focusing on art itself, often alternative "outside" art, and making art accessible for all. Their shows strive to be progressive and alternative and hope to change perceptions about art and the industry. Location: 153 Smit Service Street, Braamfontein, Johannesburg

NO END CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE JOHANNESBURG 
Linden is home to No End Contemporary Art Space, an artist-run contemporary art gallery which showcases work in a variety of media by South African contemporary artists. The gallery focuses on young, emerging artists and curators from throughout South Africa creating a platform for them to showcase their work. No End Contemporary aims to create a art-buyer pool for these emerging artists in order to assist in creating a more self sustainable contemporary art market. ASSEMBLAGE JOHANNESBURG 
Assemblage is a non-profit organisation that connects visual art students, graduates and professionals in a vibrant space in Johannesburg. Assemblage hosts various exhibitions, workshops and the popular peer mentoring groups where emerging artists can learn from the best in the art industry. Various artists also have studios at the project space where they can connect, share ideas, and collaborate together. Location: 1 Marshall St, Ferreirasdorp, Johannesburg

SPACE BETWEEN CAPE TOWN 
Located in the art hub in Woodstock, Cape Town, Space Between promotes artists inspired by popular and street culture. The space features an Artist In Residence program for visiting artists to Cape Town where artists work, liaise and collaborate with other local artists. The exhibition space, with its red brick facade, is used for various exhibitions, workshops and classes. It is situated close to Side Street Studios and The Arcade building a few meters away. Location: 139 Albert Road, Woodstock, Cape Town
