Inkunzi Emanxeba: The legacy continues... | The Legacy Project Touring Exhibition
On view at Durban Art Gallery for the month of November is the touring exhibition "Inkunzi Emanxeba: The legacy continues…" opening on 3 November 2013 at 14:00. The exhibition was conceived as the Legacy Project hence it’s uniquely curated by artist Lunga Poho to pay tribute to South African best current, established and upcoming artists. This exhibition also showcases works by international artist whom contributed to the growth and preservation of SA arts legacy and this year recognizes Alex Flett whom contributed a lot within the SA art scene through interactions and lectures at DUT, Wits, Polokwane art gallery, Art for humanity and many other organisations.
As every exhibition is defined by the artists showcasing, participating artists are Alex Flett, Bongi Bengu, Charles Nkosi, Ezekiel Budeli, Mbongeni Buthelezi, Zamani Makhanya, Colbert Mashile, Zama Dunywa, Nontsikelelo Veleko, Nompumelelo Mamqwathi Rakabe, Lucky Khuzwayo, Lunga Poho, Zolile Petshane, Amohelang Mohajane, Tebogo Maise and Tumelo Mokopakgosi. The 11 selected established artists have enormous respect within the global art world and the young emerging artists are eminently talented and creatively skilled.
All 16 artists works depicts the art culture, human and social transformation that South Africa and many other countries have to undergo in an effort to return an important added value to our lives that only the arts can impart. “Art is so much more than a painting on the wall or sculpture in a gallery, each work of art says something about the interests of the society in which it was made. Art does not occur in a vacuum, our world is constantly changing and art reflects this change” Merle Huntley.
On the 23rd of November 2013 a panel discussion will be taking place so as to create a space for a lively discussion focusing on the roles played by tertiary institutions in the development of emerging artists and in promoting artistic expression. The panelists include Charles Nkosi, Churchill Madikida and Jennifer Koping.
This exhibition hopes to inspire the imagination of communities and yet showcasing artworks of cultural, historical and economic significance. It is also intended to give a bar of gratitude to other artists whom have paved the way for emerging artists to showcase their talents freely through arts by collaboration in recognition of their contribution to the South African art scene.
“Inkunzi Emanxeba: The legacy continues…” is scheduled to tour these six major cities in South Africa: Durban, Polokwane, Bloemfontein, Cape Town, Eastern Cape and Johannesburg, so as to make contemporary art accessible to the public.
