Almost No Memory 2020 | Lizamore & Associates Johannesburg

Almost no memory

In Almost no memory, Preller engages her personal archive of photographs, in paintings that are as much about memory as the condition of forgetting/the erasure of memory. The exhibition reflects Preller’s continued interest in personal photographic archives made public in paintings refracted through the prism of the past and the camera’s lens. In her new works, more so than in previous work, the ephemerality of memory is made visible by her handling of paint; by figures that merge with the background, by the erasure of details that echo the erasure of memory. The title of the exhibition, Almost no memory, implies something of the elusiveness of memory and the spectral, haunting nature of the photograph.
