Art.co.za Watch List 2024



A new annual list of the most on-the-rise artists in South Africa

To celebrate over 20 years of Art.co.za, we are launching a new annual list of the most on-the-rise artists across various media and subject matter shaping the future of contemporary art in South Africa.

We have selected 10 artists who are gained momentum in the past year and who are reaching new heights in their art careers. See the 2024 artists below.


Athenkosi Kwinana

Athenkosi is a visual art activist based in Johannesburg who works in both drawing and printmaking. She has won various awards such as the Cultures Resistance Award and was also awarded the first grant in drawing and printmaking with the Elizabeth Greenshields Foundation.







Benjamin Mitchley

An internationally successful South African fine artist, illustrator, self-taught animator and augmented reality artist who uses AR in conjunction with the Artivive app to bring his artwork to life.





Hannalie Taute

Hannalie Taute works with rubber and particularly repurposed rubber inner-tubes, and embroidery. She has exhibited locally and internationally and has been a finalist in the ABSA L'Atelier competition and Fiesta awards.







Hazel Mphande

A self taught photographer and artist from Pretoria, Hazel has been able to diversify and apply her skills using different techniques and styles. She is especially drawn to self portraiture.





Janet Botes

Janet Botes is an artist and project coordinator with a passion for using art to inspire and uplift; supporting and protecting healthy ecosystems; and using creativity to bring people together around common interests.







Jo Roets

Capetonian Jo Roets is a passionate sculptor, painter and mould maker. Art has always been a central theme in Jo's life and art practices are interwoven in her education and professional careers.





Andrew Sutherland

Inspired by wanderlust and the narratives that underlie human encounters with the natural world, Andrew Sutherland's work relishes the delights of landscape in painted planes that combine graphic and illustrative elements with more traditionally painterly, expressive marks.







Odette Graskie

Johannesburg-based artist works with paper, thread, and drawing and investigates human interaction and affective connection.





Patrick Rulore

Patrick Rulore, winner of the 2019 Sasol New Signatures Award, focuses on around our everyday experiences and how loadshedding has impacted it. He has been a finalist of the Thami Mnyele Art Award and Goethe Institute Henrike Grohs Award and has participated in various exhibitions.







Marina Walsh

Marina works in a variety of mediums from ceramics, bronze, sandstone, concrete, marble and wood. Materiality is an important factor in her sculptures, and she is never limited to one medium. She holds craftsmanship in high regard but also allows the medium to speak and influence the direction of her work.
