Middeldeur, moederdeur.Through the centre. Deur die middel. Op twee
kontinente.Verdeeld. Living in New York City I often felt in exile - I didn't
belong anywhere, no longer in the mother country I left behind, nor in the city
that became my adopted home for twenty three years.Writing poetry in
Afrikaans allowed my voice to find comfort in the old, familiar rhythms of my
childhood language. The sounds of my mother tongue formed an invisible
bridge that served to bind the disparate parts of my American identity and
my South African origin.
From the Northern Hemisphere the constellation of the Southern Cross is
hidden below the southern horizon. With the production of my first artist's
book I named my press Southern Cross/Suiderkruis.This name stood as a
marker for the country/continent that gave me birth.
