INNER STATE

INNER STATE brings together a collection of portrait and figurative works exploring memory, identity and emotional presence.

Rather than depicting specific individuals or narratives, these works consider the traces of experience that shape how we see ourselves and others. Figures emerge, dissolve and reappear through layers of mark-making and gesture, occupying a space between observation, memory and imagination.

The exhibition reflects an ongoing interest in the internal landscapes we carry with us: our histories, emotions, vulnerabilities and moments of reflection. Some works are quiet and contemplative, while others are more fragmented and searching, yet each explores aspects of what it means to be human.

For Sarel Esterhuizen, portraiture becomes less about likeness and more about presence which is an attempt to capture something beyond appearance; something felt rather than seen.

As a debut exhibition, INNER STATE presents a body of work united by a shared inquiry into the emotional and psychological experiences that shape our understanding of ourselves and the world around us.
