According to the artist the works are inspired by old photos of nature, children, individuals and even those by the then Cape Town street photographers. These are copied onto photographic paper and then, by means of a single colourful embroidery thread and sharp needle, she explores techniques and stitches enabling her to create new stories.
Traditionally embroidery, crocheting and knitting are regarded as handicrafts. But in the same way embroidery is used as concept in the smaller works, it is also incorporated in the biologically inspired hearts. The latter has been processed through printing, painting and even adding script. Finally, they were embroidered to give structure, colour, depth and balance to the viewer. This elevates handicraft to art.
Minnie Gerber was born in 1948 in Laingsburg but resides in Gauteng since 1981. Post-matric she studied at the Teachers College in Oudtshoorn. She obtained her BA Fine Arts degree through UNISA in 2007. She started partaking in group exhibitions since 2002. Her work Infiltration is included in the UNISA Permanent Collection.
Gerber agrees with textile artist Eva Cecilie Skak Lassen. “Everything is handmade. It takes time to embroider, but I love the slowness and contemplation.”
