Rainbow Nation 2012 | The Hague, Holland

The Rainbow Nation exhibits works by around thirty artists between several locations in The Hague, brings together works that were produced during different periods of South African’s controversial history. The title – The Rainbow Nation – is a term used by Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Nelson Mandela in order to describe South Africa’s post-apartheid society, with its multiculturalism and diversity as something to be proud of. Despite the political interpretations that the term can have, its use within the context of this exhibition seems, amongst other aspects, to meet fragile questions of identity formation within the contemporary South African reality. Each artists traces his/her own position on different issues in South Africa over the past few decades.

The Rainbow Exhibition participating artists include: Jane Alexander; Deborah Bell; Willie Bester; Willem Boshoff; Andries Botha; Wim Botha; Kevin Brand; Marco Cianfanelli; Wilma Cruise; David Brown; Paul Edmunds; Hasan & Husain Essop; Dumile Feni; Kendell Geers; David Goldblatt; George Hallett; Nicholas Hlobo; Jackson Hlungwani; Pieter Hugo; William Kentridge; Sydney Kumalo; Nandipha Mntambo; Samson Mudzunga; Pitika Ntuli; Claudette Schreuders; Mary Sibande; Mikhael Subotzky; Angus Taylor; Edoardo Villa; Barend de Wet; Anton van Wouw.
