About The Artist

Artist Photo

1929 - 2014

Jeanne Kotzé Louw has been involved with artistic expression for over 50 years.

“I have worked in a wide variety of media and am still working in mainly painting: oils and alkyds and watercolours; printmaking, especially intaglio; graphics on ceramic ware. Previously I was known as a muralist concentrating on mosaics, ceramics, concrete and painted murals. Characteristic of my work is an emphasis on technique, draughtsmanship and especially the use of line which reflects a classical training. The painting technique is mainly impressionistic with the use of broken colour application.

I convey the environment in various moods, the landscape being developed mainly from sketches done in situ, including scenes from the arid regions, the Karoo and the Richtersveld, as well as scenes from the Western Cape and the Bushveld.

The subject matter is often eclectic, and includes the human form, nudes and portraits; organic forms with plants, animals and birds. Mythological themes often portray flying figures and other imaginary creatures and ethnic objects. Symbolism developed from strong religious influences from intensive studies of Byzantine Art in Italy and Greece in the fifties.”
