About The Artist
Artist Biography
Marlene (Marie-Helene) was born and raised in Johannesburg; from the young age of ten she received tuition from Nina Campbell-Quine (William Kentridge was a classmate). Her parents had no faith in the art education of the government schools. Her portfolio from Nina got her into “The Johannesburg College of Art” where history of art was an all new experience. Marlene graduated in 1976 from the Wits Technicon (WCATE) as a graphic designer. She was employed in the creative departments of various design and ad agencies, spanning a period of twelve years. Family life took up time: marriage, two daughters and a move to Benoni.
During 1994 Marlene started her full-time career as a visual artist, attending weekly workshops at the Wendy Cooke-Tonneson studio in Benoni where “we painted, mono-printed, drew our hearts out and had yearly exhibitions”. This being only the beginning of many wonderful years of involvement in art
Artist Statement
“I am an artist because, I love the ever changing nature of the creative process. Carefully decoding what is visually there, pinning it down and allowing freedom to flow beyond most rules! Perfection is boring and dull in my book, so being my own author allows me to become more hardcore and able to produce a less artificial result.
It is much more fun being true to myself, pushing boundaries and finding the hole in the fence. I could describe my work as “visceral and situationis, that is what I am about.”
