Fluid Horizons | La Scala Gallery, McGregor, Western Cape

These works present horizons as metaphors for the continually active forces and shape-shifting manifestations of nature. These can be cycles as predictable as oceanic tides, or unpredictable cataclysmic events of cosmic proportion. Horizons are as distant and infinitely celestial as deep space, or as proximate as oceanic horizons, beneath which are hidden topographies of massive volcanic landscapes and tectonic structure.

Horizons too are metaphors for the reach of a journey. When at sea the horizon moves as one moves often belying the initial conditions or points of reference from whence the journey started. Sense of place is thus rendered relative to the journey as a whole and in effect becomes an internal awareness and process. Life, in effect is not a place, but rather a journey of fluid horizons.
