Collaboration Art Project 2008
Memory - Hardus Koekemoer and Hülgard Vos
Hülgard Vos is a part-time artist with experience in the fields of psychology and archaeology; he endeavors to excavate the human psyche as a metaphor for the present. He believes that even though we have developed physically and materially, our evolution as spiritual beings have been grossly neglected if any at all.
Hardus Koekemoer is a versatile and ingenious artist with a number of successful exhibitions locally and overseas. He is known for his primitive and naïve expressionism and his depiction of animal characters in African mythologies and history. With this Collaboration art project, titled Memory, he explores the mystical relationship between primitive man and his memory, from whence early man receives its sense of being, protection and spiritual strength.
These artworks are largely figurative; the main focus is the human animal in all his developmental stages, but still seeking the beauty in the human form. The figurative drawings and paintings of nudes serve as catalyst for the observed failings humans still exhibit.
Interaction with the environment, interaction with animals, and ultimately interaction with the self are typical of this experimental work, as well as the concept of a being that has become trapped in a matrix very much like that found in an archaeological excavation.
